NAC Kids | 40th Anniversary Gala

Celebrating 40 years of impact through thoughtful editorial design.

A milestone worth celebrating

New Alternatives for Children (NAC) is a New York nonprofit supporting children with complex medical needs and their families.

For its 40th anniversary gala, the organisation brought together stories, photographs, programme information and acknowledgements in a commemorative publication celebrating four decades of work. The brochure needed to feel suitably special for a milestone occasion while presenting a considerable amount of information clearly and attractively.

Bringing the content together

My role was to design and lay out the gala publication, working with the content and imagery supplied. The design needed to accommodate several different types of material, from information about NAC's services and impact to photographs, statistics and acknowledgements.

I developed page layouts that balanced visual interest with readability, using typography, imagery, colour and spacing to establish a clear hierarchy. The cover made a bold statement with an oversized anniversary numeral, while the interior pages used a more restrained editorial approach to give the content room to breathe.

Designing for different kinds of content

One of the challenges of a commemorative publication is maintaining visual consistency across pages that serve very different purposes. Some spreads needed to communicate the organisation's mission and impact. Others needed to recognise supporters, introduce people or present detailed information. The layout brought these elements together within a cohesive publication, while allowing individual sections to have their own emphasis.

The finished publication

The result was a professionally presented gala brochure that celebrated NAC's anniversary and provided a clear, engaging way to share the organisation's work with event attendees.

For me, the project demonstrates the value of considered editorial design - taking substantial, varied content and shaping it into something that is both visually appealing and easy to navigate.
